At Thursday night's International Bluegrass Music Awards, many in attendance had heavy hearts.  Two bluegrass legends, Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson, passed away earlier this year.vvThe awards show paid tribute to Doc Watson by giving the legendary North Carolinian the Guitarist of the Year award, posthumously.

To pay tribute to Scruggs, actor-comedian-banjo player Steve Martin led a group of 30 banjo players.  Many of the best banjo players were on the stage, including Scruggs' sons Gary and Randy.

Scruggs and Martin were friends.  When Scruggs passed away, Martin wrote a touching essay in the New Yorker.  They both appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to perform Scruggs' most famous song, Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
